Herb Details
Valerian is an alkaline medicinal plant that is native to Europe and Asia, but also grows abundantly in the Andean region of Ecuador. It has been used in Europe and throughout the Americas by people such as the ancient Greeks, as well as the native tribes of the Americas.
Valerian is most commonly known for its sedative properties because it increases the production of GABA (Gamma-Amino Butyric Acid) – a neurotransmitter that helps slow down communication between cells within the nervous system. Increasing the production of GABA helps address issues from anxiety to insomnia.
Valerian emits a very potent scent, many claim it smells reminiscent to cheese-- which may not be appealing to many. But it can help restore balance to the nervous, endocrine, and circulatory systems of the body.
It is usually consumed at night, as this herb is commonly used as a sleep enhancer and muscle relaxant making it more practical to consume before bedtime.
