Loose Leaf Herbal Tea: Whole-Herb Blends and Single Herbs, Shipped Across the USA

Loose leaf herbal tea blends prepared in a ceramic pot

Short answer

Kawsaypac makes whole-herb, loose leaf herbal teas: single herbs such as guayusa, valerian and cat's claw, and hand-blended recipes for morning energy, evening calm and digestion. Most are caffeine free. Guayusa and the blends that contain it are caffeinated. Every tea is shipped across the USA, with brewing directions on the label. [1]

Key takeaways

  • Loose leaf means whole or cut herb you brew yourself, not dust in a bag. It is easier to judge quality and gives you control over strength.
  • Caffeine: guayusa contains caffeine and theobromine, so guayusa and blends that contain it (Zapped In, and kits that include Zapped In) are caffeinated. [1]
  • Evening teas such as valerian and Scales of Balance contain no caffeinated plants.
  • Barks and roots are simmered for 30 minutes. Leaves are steeped. Follow the label.

A good herbal tea starts with the herb: whole leaf, bark or root with a name on the label and an origin you can trace. Everything else, the blending, the brewing and the ritual, builds on that.

Here is how our loose leaf teas are organized, which ones contain caffeine and how to brew them.

Herbal tea for morning energy

Guayusa is a caffeinated holly leaf from the Ecuadorian Amazon. It contains caffeine and theobromine. [1] We also blend it with chuchuhuasi, ginger root and elderberry in Zapped In. Read the guayusa guide for what research found and how it compares with other caffeinated teas.

Caffeine free herbal tea for the evening

Valerian root and our Scales of Balance blend (lemon balm, ajo de monte and valerian root) are made for evening use and contain no caffeinated plants. Valerian has been studied for sleep with mixed results, summarized in our valerian guide.

Digestive herbal tea

Bowel Balance is a gentle daily digestive tea of fennel, guava leaf, tipo and stevia leaf. Bowel Banisher combines kalawalla, cat's claw and cascarilla and is simmered as a decoction. Final Flush contains senna leaf, a stimulant laxative, and is for occasional use only: read the senna tea guide first.

Single herbs and tonics

Women's, men's and full-body herbal tea kits

Our kits bundle several blends so you can follow a routine. Eliminate & Regenerate combines four blends. Her Fertile Waters and His Fertile Fires are women's and men's kits with Zapped In and clavo huasca. Because Zapped In contains guayusa, those two kits contain caffeine.

How to brew loose leaf herbal tea

  1. Measure: most of our teas use 1 heaping tablespoon per 2 cups of water (cat's claw uses 1 heaping teaspoon per 1 1/2 cups).
  2. Leaves and blends of leaves: bring water to a gentle boil, add the herb, turn the heat off, cover and steep (15 to 30 minutes depending on the blend).
  3. Barks, roots and blends with bark: bring water to a boil, add the herb, reduce to low, cover and simmer for about 30 minutes.
  4. Strain and drink warm. Take it an hour before or after meals unless the label says otherwise.
